Undergraduate Study
Where Will Your Degree Take You?
Choosing an undergraduate degree is one of the biggest education decisions you will make. It is not only about selecting a course, but also deciding where you want to study, the experiences you hope to gain and the opportunities you want your degree to open up.
Whether you are planning to study in the UK or exploring other international destinations, there may be more than one pathway to reach your goal.
At UKEC Malaysia, we help you understand and compare these options so that you can make a decision based on your academic strengths, interests, preferred destination and future plans.
What Can You Study?
At UKEC Malaysia, we start with you: your strengths, your interests and what you can see yourself doing in the future.
Some students already have a clear career direction. Others may know which subjects they enjoy but are still unsure where those interests could lead. Our role is to help you explore the possibilities, understand the differences between courses and identify a pathway that is right for you.
Undergraduate courses are available across a wide range of traditional, emerging and interdisciplinary fields, including:
- Accounting & Finance
- Business & Management
- Economics
- Human Resource Management
- Marketing
- Engineering
- Computer and Data Science
- Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Machine Learning
- Sports & Exercise Science
- Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine
- Biology, Biomedical Science, Biomedical Engineering, BioTech
- Psychology
- Law
- Politics & International Relations
- Architecture
- Creative Media, Design, Communications
- Music, Drama & Performance Art
This list is only a starting point. Many universities now offer courses that combine different subject areas, allowing students to develop knowledge and skills across more than one discipline.
Study in the UK (Our Core Expertise)
The UK remains one of the world’s most popular study destinations, known for its internationally recognised universities, diverse course options and comparatively shorter degree durations.
With UKEC’s long-standing experience in UK higher education, our counsellors can help you compare universities, understand entry requirements and identify courses that support your academic and career goals.
We work closely with students throughout the application journey, from the early stages of course exploration through to accepting an offer and preparing for departure.
Degree Duration
The duration of a UK undergraduate degree varies according to the course, university and location.
A typical undergraduate degree in England, Wales and Northern Ireland takes three years to complete, while most undergraduate degrees in Scotland would take four years.
Certain professional and specialised courses may take longer. For example, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree would commonly take five (5) to six (6) years of study.
Placement Year
One distinct advantage of a UK degree is the emphasis on developing vocational and transferable skills. For this reason, most UK undergraduate degrees offer an extra year in between a student’s penultimate and final year of studies, providing the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in industry or to study abroad in a different country.
This extra year in industry is known as a ‘placement year’ or sometimes also known as a ‘sandwich year’, allowing students to gain practical work experience as part of their undergraduate degree and test drive their career in a particular field.
Placement usually takes place before the final year of study and may last between nine (9) and twelve (12) months. Depending on the employer and programme, the placement may be paid.
Some students may also receive a graduate employment opportunity from their placement employer, although this is not guaranteed.
Not every course or university offers a placement year. Our counsellors can help you identify programmes that include work experience opportunities and understand how the additional year affects tuition fees, visa arrangements and overall study duration.
Placement Year
A placement year can help students:
- Apply what they have learned in a professional environmen.
- Develop workplace & transferable skills
- Build industry contacts
- Strengthen their CV
- Gain a clearer understanding of their preferred career direction
- Give them renewed understanding & focus on their final year study/project
How to Apply (UCAS)
